“Why
We Can’t Sit This One Out”
By
now you have heard and read all the reasons
why this upcoming election is particularly
important to union members,
working families and people of color.
SEIU and the AFL- have invested heavily in
the election of Al Gore and the political
program of the Democratic Party.
Al Gore’s positions on diversity, tax
reform, healthcare, education and the
environment are much more inline with our
social, economic and political interests
than are George W’s. Al Gore needs,
is requesting,
and
has earned our maximum efforts in electing
him President of the United States.
Not only is the Presidency at stake, but also control of the
House of Representatives and the Senate. Although the next
President most likely will nominate at least three (3) Supreme
Court Justices, the Senate must confirm those nominations. Legal
issues concerning Affirmative Action, Union Security Provisions,
States Rights, Miranda Rights and the Right to Choose, will all
come before the Court in one form or another.
As
important as all of the above is, African Americans stand to
gain the most by taking back control of the House of
Representatives. Based on their seniority, African American
Congress members are in line to assume Chairmanship of several
influential House Committees and Sub-Committees.
Their numbers will be unprecedented in the History of the
United States.
With this ascension to House Leadership, African American
Congress members and their constituents can make sure the issues
of Racial Profiling, Affirmative Action, Police Brutality,
Prison Sentencing and Reparations will join the national
discourse.
So there you have it, more meaningful reasons why a historic
turnout of African American voters is essential on November 7th.

Program, please contact your Local Union and volunteer. If you
have joined, please recruit more of your co-workers and family
members to assist.
We have as much or more to gain than any other voters. And
remember, IF NOT NOW, …..WHEN? IF NOT YOU...WHO?
