There has been a total of five African American U.S. Senators in U.S. history. The fifth U.S. Senator, Barack Obama, defeated Senator John McCain in the general election on Nov. 4, 2008 to become the first African American President of the United States. President-Elect Obama will be sworn in as the 44th U.S. President on January 20, 2009 in Washington, DC. |
